USING THE FLARE™
1. PRACTICE AHEAD OF TIME
It cannot be understated how important this step is. While the signal mirror is quite easy to use, if you’ve never properly used it, it could then pose a challenge if you have to learn under stress or in adverse conditions. Please take a few minutes on a sunny day to follow the directions below and demonstrate to yourself that you have the capability to take full advantage of this useful tool.
2. Reflect sunlight onto a nearby surface
This is merely to get an initial reference point of where the sun’s reflection is being cast. A tree, a manmade structure, or your hand (recommended), or any solid object in close range will work.
3. Look through the sight
Keeping the mirror reflecting in the same direction, bring the mirror close up to your dominant eye and close the non-dominant eye so that you can see through the sighing window.
4. LOCATE THE FLARE
Referencing where the “flare” was being cast, slowly and with small movements, look for the glowing orb “flare” being reflected within the sighting window.
5. FLASH FLARE OVER TARGET
The “flare” indicates where in space the mirror’s reflection of the sun’s light is being projected to. For signaling purposes, flash the “flare” across the target.
