the foraging experts
Consulting with foraging experts on design of the Foraging Bandana was of the utmost importance to us. We chose to work with Dr. Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen and Dr. Nicole Apelian, two expert foragers and now friends of Wazoo.
We worked with these experts to choose the wild edibles to feature based on the following criteria: 1. abundance in North America, 2. ease of identification, 3. few or no poisonous look-a-likes, 4. ability to represent on a bandana, and 5. ease to process into its usable form. With their help, we narrowed down our list to the 12 plants and fungi featured.
The Foraging Bandana is an original design by Wazoo Gear.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Foraging Bandana, and how is it used?
The Foraging Bandana™ is a plant identification bandana designed as both a wearable survival tool and a field reference.
Printed with accurate illustrations of 12 common wild plants and fungi of North America, it shows which parts are safe to use and their practical applications.
You can wear it as a bandana, stash it in a pocket, or spread it out as a quick field guide, making it useful for novice foragers, seasoned outdoorsmen, or anyone who wants to learn more about wild edible plants while on the trail.
Can the Foraging Bandana be used as more than a plant guide?
Yes! Beyond being a plant identification bandana, it also functions as a regular bandana that you can use as a head covering, sun shield, pre-filter for water, or even as emergency gear in the backcountry. Its multipurpose design makes it a favorite among both foragers and everyday adventurers.
How do I prevent fading on the Bandanas?
To keep your Foraging Bandana looking vibrant and legible, we recommend gentle care.
Wash it by hand or on a delicate cycle with cold water, and avoid bleach or harsh detergents. Line-dry instead of machine-drying to preserve the detailed plant illustrations.
With proper care, your survival bandana will last for years of backcountry use and outdoor adventures.
Is the Foraging Bandana waterproof or weather-resistant?
The bandana is made from durable, lightweight cotton that holds up well outdoors but is not waterproof.
Many foragers and hikers use it as both a plant identification bandana and a multipurpose cloth for everything from filtering debris out of water to providing shade or protection in the field.
