How do I use the Bushcraft Necklace to start a fire?
The Bushcraft Necklace pairs a ferro rod with a ceramic scraper within its design. When combined, this duo creates the sparks needed for a flame.
Prep a small pile of dry, fine tinder (fluffed fibers, shaved wood, etc.), then scrape the ceramic scraper firmly down the ferro rod to throw sparks into the tinder. The necklace makes the sparks. The tinder makes the fire.
For step-by-step instructions and quick how-to videos, see the User Manual.
What are the actual dimensions of the Bushcraft Necklace scraper and ferro rod, and cord length?
It’s intentionally compact and low-profile, built to be worn daily without feeling like you’re wearing a brick.
- Pendant Size: 13mm width x 23mm height x 1mm thick
- Ferro Rod Length: 0.3" Diameter (8mm); 1" Length (25mm)
- Cord Length: Adjusts from 14” to 28" inches; ⅛” Round
What is the scraper made from, and what if it breaks?
The striker is made of Zirconia ceramic, designed to throw sparks aggressively, but like any ceramic, it can break if it’s excessively flexed, dropped, or twisted.
How to avoid breakage:
- Strike with firm, controlled pressure. Don’t bend the ceramic
- Push the striker down the rod, but avoid torquing sideways
- Store it flat and don’t “fidget flex” it in your hands
If yours breaks, reach out to support with your order number, and we’ll help you get a replacement.
Is the Bushcraft Necklace cord adjustable, and how do I size it?
Yes, the sliding Double Fisherman’s knots create an adjustable loop system. The two barrel knots can be pushed closer together or further apart to change the length of the necklace loop.
Is the Bushcraft Necklace™ TSA Approved?
TSA doesn’t “approve” specific items in advance. Their guidance is that the final decision rests with the TSA officer at the checkpoint.
In our experience, we’ve flown with it many times without issues, but outcomes can vary by airport and agent.
Best practice: If you want maximum smooth sailing, pack it in checked luggage, or be ready to place it in a bin for inspection if asked.
You can also review TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” list HERE.
Can I wear it hiking, traveling, and every day?
Yes. It’s built for daily wear with rugged leather cordage and secure knots. It’s comfortable for normal movement and outdoor use. If you’re doing high-contact activities (climbing, grappling, etc.), wear it under a layer or tuck it in to prevent snagging.
Does it work in rain, snow, and wind?
The ceramic scraper and ferro rod duo can throw sparks even when wet or cold. In bad weather, success mostly comes down to tinder prep and wind shelter. Keep a small bit of dry tinder on you (or in your kit), and use your body, pack, or a rock as a windbreak.
Can I wear the Bushcraft Necklace in the shower, lake, ocean, and/or pool?
Yes, it’s built to be worn often. Water won’t ruin it, but a little care keeps it looking and sparking its best:
- Fresh water: rinse and let it air-dry fully.
- Salt water + heavy sweat: rinse afterward, then air-dry the ferro rod and hardware. Salt can accelerate the corrosion of any metal over time.
- Leather care: if it starts to feel dry or stiff, condition it using Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP.
Pro tip: Don’t store it wet in a bag or drawer. Let it dry first.
Is the Ferro Rod Toggle replaceable?
Yes! If you need a replacement ferro rod, contact our support team, and we'll be happy to help!
